Some famous first of the 1950’s.

The end of World War had many servicemen returning home to their families with this brought the ability to purchase many goods that were not available during wartime. The era of baby boomers and rock and roll was well on its way. Many may have noticed Buddy Holly and Elvis Presley however; some of the famous firsts were neglected by the populous.

The famous first of the 1950’s include:

1950
Ralph Bunche became the first black to receive the Nobel Peace Prize.

Charles Cooper became the first black player in NBA. He played for the Fort Wayne Indiana Celtics.

1951
Florence Chadwick became the first woman to have swum across the English Channel in each direction.

1952
George (Christine) Jorgenson became the recipient of the world's first sex-change operation.

Patricia McCormick became the first professional woman bullfighter.

1953
Desi Arnaz, Jr. and Lucille Ball appeared on the cover of the first TV Guide.

Jacqueline Cochrane became the first woman to fly faster than speed of sound.

Tenley Albright became the first American to win the Women's World Figure Skating Championship.

Elizabeth II became the first monarch to have a televised coronation.

Sir Edmund Hillary achieved the first recorded climb of Mt. Everest.

1954
Sir Roger Bannister became the first person recorded to run a mile race in under four minutes.

Benjamin O. Davis, Jr. became the first first black general in the United States Air Force.

1955
Marian Anderson became the first black singer at the Metropolitan Opera.

1957
Althea Gibson became the first black tennis player to win a Wimbledon singles title.

Laika, the dog became the first living creature to orbit the earth, aboard the Soviet satellite, Sputnik 2.

1958
Julia Child became the first woman designated a full-fledged "Chef."

William O'Ree became the first black hockey player in the NHL, playing for the Boston Bruins.

Ruth Carol Taylor became the first black woman to become a stewardess.

Clifton R. Wharton became the first black US foreign minister.

1959
Hiram L. Fong became the first Chinese-American in the United States Senate.

Daniel K. Inouye became the first Japanese-American in United States House of Representatives.
