Some famous first of the 1950’s.
The end of World War had many servicemen returning home to their families with this brought the ability to purchase many goods that were not available during wartime. The era of baby boomers and rock and roll was well on its way. Many may have noticed Buddy Holly and Elvis Presley however; some of the famous firsts were neglected by the populous.

1950
Ralph Bunche became the first black to receive the Nobel Peace Prize.
Charles Cooper became the first black player in NBA. He played for the Fort Wayne Indiana Celtics.
1951
Florence Chadwick became the first woman to have swum across the English Channel in each direction.
1952
George (Christine) Jorgenson became the recipient of the world's first sex-change operation.
Patricia McCormick became the first professional woman bullfighter.
1953
Desi Arnaz, Jr. and Lucille Ball appeared on the cover of the first TV Guide.
Jacqueline Cochrane became the first woman to fly faster than speed of sound.
Tenley Albright became the first American to win the Women's World Figure Skating Championship.
Elizabeth II became the first monarch to have a televised coronation.
Sir Edmund Hillary achieved the first recorded climb of Mt. Everest.
